it annoys me no end that, here in the US, we have to show picture ID (e.g., driver's license) in order to purchase Sudafed, and we're not allowed to purchase more than a specified amount in a specified time period. it works out to exactly the "recommended dosage" per day for one person. but everyone knows that it's sometimes necessary to take more than the recommended dose of any OTC medicine - often the only difference between the OTC form and the prescription-only form is the size of the dose, so you can save yourself the expense of having to go to a doctor and get a prescription by buying the OTC version and taking more of them. and what about people who want to buy enough to last them longer than the legal interval? or people who have more than one person in the household with sinus problems?
they make us go through these contortions because pseudoephedrine can be rather easily converted to methamphetamine ("easy" involving flammable and toxic chemicals). and, of course, meth is a very bad drug, and we have to suppress its production at all costs...
I'm not sure exaaaactly what the rules are here for pseudoephedrine but we do have some rules. I think it might be the "pharmacy must have your name and address" type of rule, which I would not notice since they have an account for me so they definitely have all that anyway.
If we have amount-buying limitations they are sufficiently high that I've never run into them, but I tend to get really nasty rebound congestion from pseudoephedrine so I reserve it for sinus headache emergencies so I don't ever really use too much! If I used it for more than about 36 hours at a time I get in all sorts of trouble...
i often need to take Sudafed continuously for weeks at a time, and quite often exceeding the "recommended" dosage. (i only get rebound congestion from nasal sprays, so i hardly ever use them.)
i don't think illegal meth is as big a problem in Australia as it is here - or at least it's not perceived to be such. (ironically, i was rather fond of it when i was a hippie... we all knew that "speed kills", but even the most hardcore speed freaks weren't like the meth heads you see as horrible examples in the news today.)
Nope ... haven't heard the story behind your nickname (first time I've seen it here - you were always 'rb' until this entry I think). Would love to, though.
BTW ... your text is huge - as in, 48 points or something - and then the entry box text is tiny. I know the large text is probably an accessibility thing, but to people who don't need the large text, it can make it less easy to read.
