How Not To Do It
Jan. 3rd, 2012 12:47 pmI had AN IDEA this morning. It was a craft-related idea which isn't actually relevant here except for this: I needed a zip.
It had to be, preferably, a red zip.
I had no zip.
I definitely had no red zip.
BUT I have the gloriously wonderful The Little Sparrow Shop just down the road and they reopened today after being closed for Christmas/New Year.
Being a sensible person (ha!) I phoned them. Yes, they did indeed have red zips. One point for me!
I grabbed my powered wheelchair and nipped down there and poked their red zips until I finally decided to get all three different sizes because I wasn't sure which would work best for my idea. I also realised that I was almost out of red felt so I grabbed some red felt too. Then I wasted more energy looking at all the wonderful craft things but resisted the temptation to buy anything I didn't need.
On the way home I realised that it was so hot that once I got home I would have no energy to actually start making my wonderful new idea-project since I had just wasted all my energy driving around in my wheelchair.
Then I knocked a chunk out of my doorframe by failing to remember quite where the edges of my new wheelchair were.
Then I ran over the cat's water bowl while trying to park the chair, spilling water all over the floor.
Back in my nice coooooool air conditioned room in my comfy bed I realised that I was 35 minutes late in taking my midodrine, the tablets where I have to be accurate to about 15 minutes in the timing where I take them. Messing this up ensured that not only have I wasted all of today's energy but probably some of tomorrow's too.
Finally, writing this up, I realised that if I had just phoned my helper - who was doing my shopping very close by while the above farce was taking place - she would have happily picked up the zippers for me.
It's one of those days... but at least I'm laughing about it!
Happy New Year, friends :)

Date: 2012-01-04 09:59 am (UTC)This attitude is especially baffling to the poor sales staff at my local fabric shop who find "could you cut 4 metres of mid-grey lightweight poplin and put it aside so my helper can pick it up" to be a terrifying request! No doubt they have endless returns in mind but I've never actually had ANY purchase done this way turn out so badly I wanted to return things.
It takes all types :)

Date: 2012-01-04 11:14 pm (UTC)furthermore, when i have an idea, i usually have a quite specific concept in my mind, and creating it involves finding materials that correspond with (or can be adapted to) that concept. sometimes it takes hours of shopping, in several different stores, before i get everything i need - and sometimes i have to abandon the project, because the stuff i want doesn't seem to exist.
i miss old-fashioned fabric stores.

Ahaha! One time I was walking home, ended up going in completely the opposite direction and ended up near a restaurant. Then I realized what I'd done, retraced my steps, got lost a second time, and when I finally made it home and told my mom, she said: "Well, why didn't you go into the restaurant and call me to come pick you up?" I..never thought of it. XD

Date: 2012-01-04 10:01 am (UTC)I hate it SO MUCH when I waste a whole ton of precious energy on something and then realise that asking for help would have been quite easy :/

Date: 2012-01-03 02:17 am (UTC)Yep, craft supply places are full of things besides "red zips" but pleased you have a selection when you have got over your "too much to handle adventure" today :-)
Right now, the regular "habit of summer" is just about overwhelming me.
I too came up with this wild idea about having a dedicated craft space and after considering the rooms available chose the current "overflow" room - well of course everything in there has to "flow" somewhere else and it has in the main - which has led to me having to look at where that "overflow" will reside elswehre
I now realise that doing some craft "work" will not take place anytime soon but it has made me look at what others have deemed I should keep/have for whatever reason...
the overflow stuff awaits the new space...after !@#$%^& happens

but she wouldn't have run over the cat's water bowl with quite the same finesse or style.
