Going to spend 24 hours of sunday without media altogether - no phone, no mobile, no iPod, no television, no radio, no magazines, no newspapers and no computer!!

Was fascinated by University of Maryland's day-without-media study and distant memories of my mostly-media-free childhood (no computer, no TV, no mobile devices - did have magazines, newspapers, radio though) and so my friend George and I will be doing this 24 hour experiment to see what happens.

I know in the past I've oddly enjoyed times when my computer has been broken as it's something like a forced meditation retreat.

I'll let you know how it goes ... it's too extreme for me to want to be like that all the time though!

I've tried it — it was a fascinating experience.

... no books?

are you at least allowed to make up stories to entertain yourself?

i had that sort of life for nearly three weeks, albeit involuntarily. i did have my phone (which is a stupidphone - all it can do is make phone calls, handle text messages, and take poor-quality pictures), and a little pocket-size transistor radio to listen for emergency alerts. but i had no electricity (and therefore no computer or tv), no land-line phone, no internet access; also no heat, stove, or refrigerator, no light to read by, and most of my books were destroyed by flood water anyway. this lasted for twenty days.

i intend to stay as connected as humanly possible for the rest of my life :-D

There is a delightful irony in knowing that you're going to blog about this once it's done. *grin*

I hope it goes well for you and will be interested to read your thoughts when they come!

Good luck! I tried this a few times last year and ended up giving up by mid-morning.

i've always wanted a cyberpunk-style "datajack", or some similar direct connection into my brain. being forcibly thrown back to the "stone knives and bearskins" level only made me want it even more. but the cyberpunks never seem to have considered what would happen when the electricity goes away over a wide area for a long time :-(
