It's a very cheap knockoff of a designer lamp by Front Design. The original is life sized... see if I can find a pic...http://www.moooi.nl/producten/124-horse-lamp.html

So... you're saying you don't want one for your birthday?

if the "post" bearing the lamp bit went through the horse's mid-body, and/or if the horse were in a rearing position, it could be taken as a carousel horse - i've seen lamps that were very explicitly meant to be carousel horses. but this is just a life-like horse with a lamp sticking out of its head - wtf?

Doesn't bother me. I've seen odder lamps. For one, there's a candle on the second page of a Cracked article on horrifying thrift store finds... but if the horse seems nightmarish to you, clicking that link may be a very bad idea. Leg lamps also come to mind. I've come across others, too, but the specifics have been repressed.

And I was thinking that it was kind of like a unicorn. But yeah, Companion will do, especially when the light is on.

Based on the poll, I was all prepared to say "This looks like it belongs on Regretsy," but I actually don't find it very remarkable.

a quick look at IKEA Australia produces a fair number of lamps, many of which might be considered "ordinary" (although some in a not-really-so-ordinary way!), at reasonable prices. alas, the website doesn't specify which ones have the switch in the cord, but most of the lamps i've bought from IKEA USA do. (i just bought an LED desk lamp for my computer area, on sale after Xmas; it wouldn't do for a bedside lamp, though.)

I'm sure I've seen weirder! It just looks like someone with too much time on their hands, too much superglue, and too many unpainted model horses decided to do something fun.

i want to know why the color for that 'white' lamp is listed as 'black' in the item description...

(( i'd wager it's b/c the original is black - per the link in the first comment ))

Actually, British Airways has a number of life sized lamps like this. This is the only link i can find: http://www.frontdesign.se/newsupdate_mooi.htm

I think the one you found is a cheap knock-off of it. The real one, life-sized, is actually stunning. But I still don't like it.

*smile* Sounds like you need a clap-activated lamp - as long as the act and sound of clapping to turn it off wouldn't rouse you from half-sleep...

hmmm... that's bizarre. you can save items to a "shopping list", but there's no provision for ordering! all the list does is keep track of stuff you've marked; they want you to print the list and bring it to the store. that makes no sense at all...

you can buy gizmos that plug into the wall, and then you plug your device into them, that make the device touch-sensitive (only works with something that has a metal body) or sound-activated ("The Clapper") - i don't know whether there are any commercially available ones for Australian electrical standards, because all the heavily advertised ones are for the US market. if i were there, i'd just go into that big electronics/hobby store and see what they've got...
