I think there is only one reason to iron towels, ever: if you're trying to kill off fungal infections (and even then strong bright sunlight is better if available, ironing towels is a last resort in cloudy wet weather.)

Ironing towels doesn't make sense. The whole point of a towel is that it's fluffy and absorbent, and it achieves that by having a surface made out of loosely woven loops. If you iron the towel, you crush all those loops flat, and then the towel is no more absorbent than a handkerchief. If you absolutely must have un-crumpled towels, tumble-dry them according to the manufacturer's direction, then fold them neatly while they're still warm and put them on a shelf or in a drawer or someplace like that. (Does "anal retentive" contain a hyphen?)

P.S. - Happy Birthday, dear penguin! May your day be as happy as humanly possible! I wish I could bake and decorate a cake for you, and give you lots of hugs as well!
